Expressive Real-Time Animation: Cinematics in Unreal Engine

This workshop introduces participants to interactive animation in Unreal Engine 5.5.  They will learn how game engines work and use their tools to create expressive, spontaneous  animations—like puppeteering characters with a gamepad/MIDI controller, triggering FX with button presses, or moving cameras with joysticks.

We'll cover different types of Animations in Unreal Engine and mix them together into a short Cinematic story. By the end, participants will feel comfortable using Unreal Engine as a playful, experimental tool for  personal projects or installations.

Course Assignments
Students will work in small groups to direct a 30-second music video clip for a song. They'll animate, photograph, and customize their stage in Unreal Engine, mixing animation styles to match the song's mood.

• Day 1 : Introduction to Unreal Engine & Sketchfab
• Day 2 : Real-Time Animation Workflows with Gamepads
• Day 3 : Groups and Rock Band Music Video

Conditions for participation
Ideally, you should bring a laptop with Unreal Engine 5.5 already downloaded.

Registration
Participation is possible with binding registration by May 19 via the following link.

Language
The event will be held in English.

The workshop will take place as part of the exhibition “Soft Spaces, Shared Grounds.”
