Removing barriers at the art school

Since 2023, +dimensions and ARTplus Berlin have been working closely together to remove barriers at the art school and drive sustainable change. As part of this effort, comprehensive guidelines have been developed for the art school helpdesk, specifically aimed at students and staff. These guidelines provide information on compensation for disadvantages, existing physical barriers, and practical tips for inclusive teaching. Additionally, they include a collection of technical aids, useful tools, and further links to enable diverse access for people with different needs.

In addition to providing these resources, practice-oriented training opportunities have been developed. Workshops for staff were organized to raise awareness and offer concrete solutions for implementing barrier-free structures. Another example of this collaboration was the 2024 Hochschultag titled "Equity & Mental Health – Hochschultag Against Ableism", which was organized and conducted jointly with the Equal Opportunities Commission. The event provided space for exchange, reflection, and extensive information.

Another key aspect of the collaboration was the initiation of a joint writing process, allowing university members to share their experiences and ideas. The final text was published in "Intertwining Practices: Lehren / Lernen / Forschen" in 2024.

Additionally, +dimensions and ARTplus Berlin played a key role in making the art school website more accessible, including a video in German Sign Language and texts in plain language.

Furthermore, in cooperation with the building and facility management team and Sozialheld*innen e.V., a comprehensive process was launched to identify and reduce physical barriers. Through joint inspections, teaching and learning spaces were systematically documented, existing obstacles were recorded, and concrete recommendations for action were developed. The goal is to create a more accessible and barrier-free art school environment that enables equal participation for all members in the long term.
