Verena Melgarejo Weinandt

The conversation with Verena Melgarejo Weinandt at Peertube.

How are artistic, design, performative and scientific research entangled? At what point is research artistic or shape-giving? And aren’t art and design always a form of research? In the summer semester of 2022, +dimensions invited to the dialogue series “Blurred Territories: Art / Design / Research.” In this first iteration five artists/theorists/designers reflected on the entanglements of research and aesthetic practice from their different perspectives, and shared ideas about different methods and approaches.

The first guest was Verena Melgarejo Weinandt. Melgarejo Weinandt studied fine arts and art and cultural studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and at the Instituto Universitario Nacional de Bellas Artes Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her work encompasses academic research, curatorial and artistic practice, and education/outreach in institutional and self-organized spaces. Her curatorial projects have included a critique of colonial collecting and exhibition practices, including at the Weltmuseum Vienna, and focusing around Chicana author, theorist, and artist Gloria Anzaldúa. She is currently finalizing her research project “Decolonizing Artistic Research: A Methodology by Gloria E. Anzaldúa” at the UdK Berlin. Her focus of analysis relates the understanding of knowledge, through which boundaries between artistic practice, theoretical and political reflection, and spiritual knowledge are dissolved. This results in a critical view of the Eurocentric definition of the relationship between research and artistic practice, since Anzaldúa focuses on the implicit critique of knowledge conceptions that reinforce hegemonic power structures and thereby also define which forms of knowledge and subjectivities are affirmed or delegitimized, leading to an understanding of knowledge as a form of healing decolonial wounds.
